Which Printer is Right for Me?

When it comes to choosing a printer, the decision usually revolves around inkjet or laser. Then you must decide if you will choose color or black and white. The decision is never just "black and white" however. There are several things you need to consider as well. Cost is the major factor in the equation. You need to figure out how you will use the printer and how much you want to invest in it.

Laser printers are fast, have excellent quality, and are relatively quiet. So what's the downside to a laser printer? Laser printers are usually very expensive. You will end up paying at least $1000 for a good quality color laser printer.

Inkjet printers are the second and most widely chosen purchase for home users. They are inexpensive and offer good quality. You won't be able to get true black with an inkjet printer. The cartridges usually don't last very long, and you must purchase black and white and color cartridges.

There are a few costs that many store clerks won't tell you. When deciding which printer to purchase, find out how much the cartridges cost. Find out how many pages the average catridge lasts. Ask about their warranty policy. You also need to make sure that the printer doesn't require special paper.

But, what about the three-in-one machines(fax, scan, printer)? They can be very useful, but don't expect the quality to be the same as a standalone unit. Also, keep in mind that if one section of the machine malfunctions, you may be unable to use the other portions of the unit.
